SPECIAL EDUCATION AND COVID-19
- COVID-19 has put light on and exposed to a greater degree the significant Diversity Gap,
- It exposed and exacerbated existing variances between students
- Teachers need to be aware that the need for differentiated instruction is significant, even more than previously.
- Implemented distance learning, does not replicate the in-person learning experience.
- It widened the divide in the educational gap and decreased academic progress rates
- Teachers have experienced difficulty
- Accessing or engaging with virtual instruction.
- Maintaining the quality of instruction
- Students are grieving the experience of missed experiences, becoming prompt dependent and having difficulty:
- Completing course work
- Getting immediate feedback
- Interacting with peers
- Staying in contact with instructors
- Staying motivated
Compounding Issues:
- State department of education has provided little to no guidance as how to open up schools and special education services.
- Those with developmental disabilities are often treated as second-class citizens
- Guidelines and protocols have not put them as a priority.
- Children with special needs have had to deal with:
- Untrained substitutes and therapists
- Instruction over video platforms or via written packets
- No hands-on instruction or attention
- Many have regressed
- Many have lost valuable educational time that cannot be make up
- Educational gaps have grown wider
